My Responsibilities
- Worked on the shared player code that now serves Tizen, webOS and browsers from one codebase
- Packaged, signed and uploaded Tizen builds to Samsung Seller Office for release
- Added synchronization, a new authentication flow and auto-update to the player
- Made playback stable on old Samsung TVs that froze because of low memory
- Stored cached video on the TV file system through the Tizen API
Advantages
- Runs natively on Samsung TVs as an installable app
- Works offline from the local cache
- Shares one codebase with the web and webOS players
- Released through the official Samsung store channel
Challenges
- Tizen firmware can only write binary files in a specific way
- Old TVs have little memory and one hardware video decoder
- Samsung review and certificate requirements for each release
Solutions
- Wrote video to the TV file system and kept only a file link in the local database
- Limited the cache size and cleaned unused files automatically
- Prepared signed .wgt packages and tracked every version in Seller Office
